Democrats won the first round of redistricting yesterday, with victories in Mississippi and Virginia.
Democrats flipped the Virginia Senate and the Mississippi Senate and expanded our majority in the Mississippi House. All three chambers serve four-year terms.
"Democrats now control the first three chambers that have already elected the legislators who will serve through the redistricting process," says DLCC Executive Director Michael Sargeant. "We look forward to continuing our success in 2008."
Redistricting takes on even more importance with a GOP initiative in California to distribute electoral college votes along Congressional district lines.
Democrats made gains in the Virginia House, picking up four seats. The entire chamber will be up again in 2009.
Democrats also held the New Jersey Assembly and expanded their majority in the New Jersey Senate.
Democrats won special election victories to expand their majority in the Maine House.
Democrats now control 57 chambers to the Republicans' 39, with two chambers tied.
This expands the DLCC and state legislative Democrats winning streak to five years.
Louisiana will hold elections on Saturday, November 17, 2007.
