Sleazy Republican Ad Makes Fun of Disabilities

<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3l-LxT3-q8>

During the narrator's complete non sequitur about golfing, she says "I have a huge handicap" and laughs.

This is significant because Flanagan is running against Brooke Ellison <http://www.brookeellison.com>, who is disabled.  She was hit by a car at the age of 11 walking home from school.  She is now paralyzed and dependent on a ventilator.  She's also extremely accomplished: she graduated magna cum Laude from Harvard in 2000, and she's worked to bring national attention to this issue.  Christopher Reeve's last project was directing The Brooke Ellison Story.

More about the national implications of this, after the jump.

Brooke is advocate for stem cell research, as well as housing opportunities, educational funding and feasible transportation solutions.  She has been on The Long Island Press's list of the "The Year's 50 Most Influential People" for the past two years.

Flanagan is a swiftboating, Rove Republican who will do anything to hold onto power.

This race may have larger implications as well.  New York state will lose at least one Congressional seat after the next round of redistricting <http://www.dlcc.org/news/news.html>.  Republicans currently control the New York Senate 35 to 27.  If they continue to control the state Senate, they can force New York Congressional Democrats to absorb that loss.  If Democrats are involved in the redistricting process in the New York Senate, there could be a net gain of two Democratic Congressional seats:  Democrats could make Republicans absorb the loss, and could make another Congressional district competitive and winnable for a Democratic candidate.

This has also been posted on the Albany Times Union blog <http://blogs.timesunion.com/capitol/?p=2246>, NJ's Hotline Last Call, and Crain's Insider (sorry, no links).
